Homeless Ministries

Providing basic needs such as companionship, meals and caring, along with clothing, water and occasional emergency shelter for our local unhoused community.

We provide a sense of welcome and belonging for folks who are often underserved, maligned, or worse, unseen in our communities.

There is a certain notion about the experience of homelessness in our culture. Some folks do live outdoors, completely unsheltered except for their tents. And some live with mental illness or substance use disorders. But the reality of homelessness is much bigger, wider and deeper than we are often willing to see and acknowledge.

There are individuals, couples and families living in their cars or day-to-day in motels. Some are going from one friend’s couch to another because there are no other available housing options. There are folks who are housed in marginally habitable places. There are working individuals who live in shelters or transitional housing because their income doesn’t cover the cost of living on Cape Cod, and they must choose between food, a car to get to their jobs, and permanent housing. There are people who have fled domestic violence and now have no place to go. There are family conflicts, especially in the LGBTQI community that lead to homelessness and youth homelessness. There are students trying to better their lives while sleeping, eating and doing their homework in their vehicles. There are so many people struggling and so many contexts and faces of homelessness here in our community.

Homeless Ministries offers life-giving connection and items that help to provide for basic needs such as food, water, clothing, and emergency shelter. Moreover, these ministries offer a sense of community and belonging for folks who are so often maligned, underserved or worse, unseen in our communities.

Emergency housing was provided for a woman who had been sleeping in her car with two children. Her gratitude was humbling.

Programs

Here Now Ministries

Providing Worship and Fellowship

Founded in 2018 by Rev. Pam Wannie, Here Now Ministries aims to ‘build bridges’ between our local housed and unhoused communities through outdoor worship. Our monthly worship gathers on the lawn of the First Baptist Church of Hyannis at 486 Main Street, 2:00pm rain or shine. Our mission is to show God’s love through inclusive, compassionate connection with all, and especially for people experiencing homelessness. Our vision is to meet people where they are and gather in God’s love. We worship together and share a communion feast where everyone is welcome at the table. All church communities are invited to share in providing worship or fellowship with us. For more information, contact Rev. Pam Wannie.

Hospitality Housing

For Emergency Situations

Hospitality Housing offers emergency short-term shelter for families or individuals facing homelessness thanks to donations and limited federal funding.

Youth StreetReach

An Integrated Education, Worship and Outreach Program

Founded in 2007 by Marilyn Lariviere, Deborah Golden, Kelsey Collett and many area youth, Youth StreetReach helps youth increase awareness of injustice and build respect for the dignity of all people, especially the lonely, lost, and disenfranchised. Teens are offered a unique and valuable experience – a chance to interact with our brothers and sisters who have or are still dealing with being homeless. Youth hear firsthand how each life’s path may lead to unexpected circumstances and how a community of faith and love can change lives. Monthly breakfasts are held at the First Baptist Church at 468 Main Street in Hyannis.
