Healing with Compassion
& Prayer

God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, nor sun without rain. But God did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.”

The Hospital Chaplaincy program is sited at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and offers prayers, hope and comfort to patients and their families who are in crisis after an accident, illness or disease such as a heart attack, stroke, surgery or amputation.

Recently, a patient shared, “Ed has been a light in the darkness for me.”

He then began to share how grateful he was to God that he survived a collision with a car that could have easily claimed his life. He remarked how he longed to be home with his wife and hug his two grown daughters.

Then he said something I don’t think I’ll ever forget. “I’m happier today with one leg than I ever was with two.” I stood there in awe. We both were silent for a moment. Tears were present in my eyes as they were in his.

Connecting with Patients

I remember entering the room of a 70 year-old man who was suffering from injuries received in a motorcycle accident. The patient sat in a wheelchair due to his left leg having been severed in the crash. Despite this terrible loss, he was smiling. Since I read earlier that he was being discharged the next day, I expected this explained, in part, why he was so glad.
