Healing with Compassion
& Prayer

The Hospital Chaplaincy program, located at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod, offers prayers, hope and comfort to patients and their families, as well as to hospital staff. Our Interfaith Chaplain honors a range of religious traditions for those in his care.

God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, nor sun without rain. But God did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.

Connecting with Patients

I remember entering the room of a 70-year-old man who was recovering from severe injuries received in a motorcycle accident. Despite his terrible trauma, he was smiling. Since I read earlier that he was being discharged the next day, I expected that this explained, in part, why he was so glad.

He then began to share how grateful he was to God that he survived a collision with a car that could have easily claimed his life. He remarked how he longed to be home with his wife and hug his two grown daughters.

Then he said something I don’t think I’ll ever forget. “I’m happier today with one leg than I ever was with two.” I stood there in awe. We both were silent for a moment. Tears were present in my eyes as they were in his.
